These are the trips at the edge of the day-trip envelope. Around two and a half hours of block time each way, five hours of flying in total, plus whatever the meeting takes. It works, and it is genuinely better than an overnight for a half-day session — but it is a long day and we are not going to describe it as anything else.
The calculation is straightforward. If the meeting is three hours or less, the day trip almost always wins: you are home in the evening, nobody pays for a hotel, and nobody loses a second working day. If the meeting runs past mid-afternoon, an overnight is usually the better call and we will say so.
Where these routes earn their keep is in reaching markets genuinely far from a hub. Denver to Wichita, Chicago to Savannah, Boston to Charlotte — pairs where the airline routing is a connection and most of a day, and where a five-hour flying day is still dramatically better than the alternative.
Crew duty limits are a real constraint at this end of the network. A long flying day plus a long meeting can push against them, and when that happens we restructure or reschedule rather than press on.

Markets far from a hub
This is where the routing advantage is largest — pairs the airlines connect through a hub with most of a day of block time.
Duty limits are planned, not hoped
A long flying day plus an overrunning meeting can hit crew duty limits. We plan against that in advance rather than discovering it at the far end.

Longer day trips
How long is a 700 nm leg?
About 2 hours 35 minutes of block time, so roughly 5 hours 10 minutes of flying for the round trip. Add your meeting and the ground time at each end to see whether the day closes.
When should I take the overnight instead?
When the meeting runs past mid-afternoon, when there is more than one meeting, or when arriving fresh matters more than sleeping at home. We will give you a straight recommendation — a longer trip bills more hours, and that is not a reason to recommend one.
Can you fly further than 700 nm?
Yes. The aircraft's book range is 1,275 nm and we quote longer legs on request. They are simply not part of the published same-day network, because past this distance the day-trip promise stops being true.
