Almost every argument for business aviation eventually reduces to this one. A meeting worth having is three hours away by road or a connection away by air. By airline it costs a day and a half: a flight out the evening before, a hotel, the meeting, and most of the next day getting home. By car it costs two half-days of driving and an arrival that is already tired.
By air, point to point, it costs a morning and an afternoon. That is the whole proposition, and everything else on this site is downstream of it.
The expensive part of business travel was never the airfare. It is the hotel night, the evening away from home, and mostly the second working day that several people spend in transit rather than working. Price those honestly and a day trip that looked extravagant on the invoice is frequently cheaper in total.
Halcyon caps the published network at 700 nautical miles for exactly this reason. The Cirrus Vision Jet has a book range of 1,275 nm and will happily fly further, but past about 700 the round trip stops fitting into a day and the product becomes something else. We would rather publish a smaller network that does what it says.
What makes it work
The second day is the real cost
A hotel is a few hundred dollars. Four people's second working day is not. That is the line item a day trip removes, and it is usually the largest one.
Ten minutes of airport
No screening, no gate, no boarding group. Arrive shortly before departure, walk to the aircraft, and go. It is the hour at each end, not the flight time, that makes the day work.
Departure times that flex
Meetings run long. Within crew duty limits the return moves with you, which is much of what separates this from a ticket.
Nobody sleeps in a hotel
An underrated part of the argument. People who go home at night are better the following week than people who spent a night away for a two-hour conversation.

Same-day round trips
What is the furthest you can go and still get back the same day?
About 700 nautical miles, roughly 2 hours 35 minutes of block time each way. That is where our published network stops. Beyond it the day gets long enough that an overnight usually makes more sense, and we will say so rather than sell you a fourteen-hour day.
How early can we depart?
Early enough for a first-shift walkthrough or a 9am meeting several states away, within crew duty rules. Early departures are routine and are often the reason the day works at all.
What if the meeting runs long?
Tell us it might, and we plan for it. Within crew duty limits a later return is usually absorbable. What we will not do is push a crew into a duty-limit problem because a meeting overran — if the day stops working we will say so while there is still time to arrange a hotel.
Is a day trip actually cheaper than an overnight?
Sometimes, and it depends entirely on headcount. For one traveller, rarely. For four people whose time is expensive, frequently — once you price the hotel, the meals, and a second working day. The arithmetic is simple enough to do properly, and we would rather you did it than took our word for it.
